Scientists performing integrated monitoring of Ladoga Skerries NP ecosystems
A multidisciplinary expedition to the Ladoga Skerries National Park was performed by specialists from several subdivisions of KarRC RAS. The focus was on the park’s plants and animals. Scientists map the forest cover and its dynamics, identify rare species, and evaluate human impact on the natural ecosystems. The results can be used when planning economic and recreational activities in the protected area.

Aapa mires – a potential joint research interest for scientists from Karelia, Khabarovsk, China
Head of the Mire Ecosystems Laboratory at the Institute of Biology KarRC RAS Stanislav Kutenkov took part in the International Symposium on Conservation and Sustainable Development of Peatland Resources in the Chinese city of Changchun. The laboratory implements studies far beyond Karelia, including the Russian Far East, so there is potential for collaboration with Chinese scientists on comparative mire studies.

Scientists exploring for fungal strains capable of controlling ixodid tick numbers
Karelian scientists have conducted an experiment where taiga ticks (Ixodes persulcatus) were infected with various strains of entomopathogenic fungi – parasites that affect many groups of arthropods. The strain collected from Bolshoy Solovetsky Island in the White Sea proved to be the most effective: tick mortality in this treatment was 45% on the seventh day and rose to 95% on the eleventh day. The results can be used to develop biologics for controlling the numbers of the main vector of dangerous diseases.

Scientists of KarRC RAS introduce federal and regional mass media to their research objects
Journalists from federal and regional mass media learned about the objects studied by researchers of the Karelian Research Centre RAS on the “Journey to Science. Karelia” press tour organized by the National Priorities NPO. A part of the National Science and Technology Decade is the popular-science tourism program, which gives its participants a chance to actually see how domestic science is developing and to visit research laboratories and fieldwork sites.

Geographer’s Day in an unconventional way at KarRC RAS Environmental Research Museum
Geographer’s Day is celebrated in Russia on August 18th, honoring the foundation of the Russian Geographical Society (RGS) on this day in 1845. So this year is the RGS’s 180th anniversary. In Karelia, the date is also a round-number anniversary — the local RGS branch was founded 80 years ago. To befit the date, Karelian geographers celebrated it in a special manner: an open lecture series was held at the Museum of Applied Environmental Research KarRC RAS.

Karelian scientists resume observations of forest ecosystems in Paanajarvi National Park
Scientists from the Department for Multidisciplinary Research KarRC RAS went on an expedition to the Paanajarvi National Park, where they explored Arctic biodiversity and could compare the development of north-boreal ecosystems in a pristine area not affected by human activities and in forests with more noticeable human impact.

Karelian scientist creates 3D models of ancient stromatolites
Stromatolites are amazing fossils – structures deposited by ancient cyanobacteria in shallow waters billions of years ago. Geologists most often find them in carbonaceous rocks: dolomites and limestone. Some of the most ancient stromatolites have been discovered and explored in Karelia. Their studies have progressed to a new level: a young scientist from the Institute of Geology KarRC RAS Andrey Lyutikov has designed a technique for 3D simulation of the structures.

Scientists pin down a first finding of wolf-dog hybrids in the wild in Karelia
Genetic study of wolves taken down by hunters in Karelia shows hybrids from crossing between wild animals and dogs are appearing in the population. Scientists believe this may be driven by the hunting pressure – a survival strategy for the species. On the other hand, hybridization and inbreeding – crossings between close relatives – jeopardize the population in general. Meanwhile, wolves play a pivotal ecological role.

Ethnologists and historians from KarRC RAS visited villages historically inhabited by Ludic Karelians
An educational and popular-science ethnographic expedition to the Kondopoga District was undertaken by specialists from the Institute of Linguistics, Literature and History (ILLH) KarRC RAS within the project “Ludic Karelians: History, Culture, Traditions”. Scientists visited settlements historically inhabited by Ludic Karelians, talked to locals, observed countryside living and working routines, and participated in the making of a popular-science film.

Researchers monitor the state of Lake Onego under climate change and human impact
Staff of the Northern Water Problems Institute KarRC RAS are back from an expedition that covered larger bays and deep-water regions of Lake Onego. The multidisciplinary studies both provide new data on the wellbeing of the lake ecosystem through modern analysis methods and permit tracing the changes relying on over 60-year-long own observation series. Annual monitoring is especially important for evaluating the combined effect of climate change and human impact on the lake.

Karelian scientists assess the consequences of human impact on Solovki ecosystem
In 2025, KarRC RAS scientists continued field surveys in Blagopoluchiia Bay, Solovetsky Archipelago, White Sea. Two expeditions have already taken place – in winter and in summer, and one more is coming in August. Scientists explore the human impact on the archipelago’s nature, both in the bay waters and on adjacent land. They have detected an unusual ice structure, collected sediment cores to assess the pollution level, described the composition of the flora in the intertidal zone and the coastal meadows.
