A delegation of the Karelian Research Centre RAS made up of representatives of the Department for Multidisciplinary Research, Institute of Biology, and Forest Research Institute is taking part in the 9th Congress of the Dokuchaev Soil Science Society, which is hosted by the Kazan (Volga Region) Federal University. This year, the congress is timed to the 100th anniversary of the International Union of Soil Sciences, 300th anniversary of the Russian Academy of Sciences and is held under the motto “Soils - a pillar of Russia”.
The event has gathered over 500 researchers from around Russia and from abroad. The Karelian soil science school has operated for over 50 years. The delegation from our republic at the congress is headed by Olga Bakhmet, RAS Corr. Academician, KarRC RAS Acting Director General, member of the Dokuchaev Society’s Central Board and chairperson of the Karelian Branch of the Society. At the symposia and sessions, KarRC RAS employees present the results of their research conducted under state assignments and within various grant-funded projects, including the State-significance Key Innovative Project “Unified National System for Monitoring Climate Active Substances”.
Dokuchaev Soil Science Society unites specialists of different profiles around a common goal - optimizing the economic use of the country's soil resources. The Congress of the Society is the biggest forum for discussing issues in this sphere. It is held once every four years. The 2012 Congress of the Society was hosted by the Karelian Research Centre RAS.

Scientists suggest creating a geopark network incorporating all of Karelia’s geological attractions
The Institute of Geology KarRC RAS has developed a project to create a network of geoparks in Karelia. Scientists are convinced that the republic's geological attractions are a "new mineral resource," and a renewable one: they can serve the tourism, recreation, education, and economic purposes. The prospects for creating such a network were presented by Sergey Svetov, Director of the Institute of Geology, at the closing of the "Stone Chronicle of Karelia" project, within which scientists familiarized with the republic's residents with the geological past and present of our region.

A couple of days ago, KarRC RAS Director General Olga Bakhmet familiarized Prime Minister of the Republic of Karelia Government Andrey Sergeev with new developments in potato production, regionalization of berry crops, and cultivation of medicinal plants.
