Two scholars from KarRC RAS receive high-level government awards

Today, 30th October 2025, in the run-up to the National Unity Day, Head of Karelia Artur Parfenchikov handed over high-level government awards to two Karelian scientists, representatives of the Institute of Biology KarRC RAS. Evgeny Ieshko was awarded the Order of Honor, and Nina Nemova received the Medal of Merit of the Republic of Karelia.
A decree of the President of the Russian Federation awards the Order of Honor to Evgeny P. Ieshko. The scientist, who has devoted more than half a century to scientific work at the Karelian Research Centre RAS, was congratulated by the Head of the Republic, Artur Parfenchikov.

Evgeny P. Ieshko is a Doctor of Biological Sciences, Parasitology Professor, Chief Researcher at Animal and Plant Parasitology Laboratory of the Institute of Biology KarRC RAS, Professor of Zoology and Ecology Department at Petrozavodsk State University, Merited Scientist of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Karelia. This year he celebrated the 75th anniversary. Having graduated from Petrozavodsk University with ichthyology major in 1974, he took a job at the Parasitology Laboratory of the Institute of Biology of the USSR Academy of Sciences’ Karelian Branch (now KarRC RAS) to stay there for more than 50 years of fruitful work. The scientist had headed the laboratory for more than 30 years, and now holds a Chief Researcher position there.

Evgeny Ieshko is a renowned researcher in environmental parasitology, recognized both in Russia and abroad. His primary focus is basic and applied research of the relationships between parasitic organisms and their environment, host-specificity, zoogeography, and evolution of parasites. A pivotal stage in his career was the development of methodological and conceptual approaches to studying the populational ecology of fish parasites. He proposed and substantiated the hypothesis of the role of parasites in maintaining the biological diversity of communities and formulated key concepts regarding the spatial structure, population dynamics, and distribution of parasites within fish populations. His studies have contributed tangibly to solving the fundamental biological problem of how parasitic organisms adapt to changing environmental factors. Based on this work, methods have been developed for assessing the wellbeing of aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems at northern latitudes.

The results of Evgeny Ieshko's s are regularly published in high-ranking scientific journals. In total, he has authored and co-authored more than 300 academic papers, including three monographs and three textbooks. In addition to doing research, the scientist is involved in training the next generation of researchers at Petrozavodsk State University. Nine Candidates of Sciences have defended their dissertations under his supervision. He also supervises the preparation of the University’s bachelor's and master's student graduation papers.

Nina N. Nemova is a Doctor of Biological Sciences, Karelia’s first Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences, KarRC RAS Research Area Leader, Chief Researcher at the Ecological Biochemistry Laboratory of the Institute of Biology KarRC RAS, Merited Scientist of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Karelia. Year 2025 is her 75th anniversary year. Having graduated from Petrozavodsk University in 1972, she took a job at the Institute of Biology of the USSR Academy of Sciences’ Karelian Branch (now KarRC RAS) to later become its Director and hold this post for 20 years.

Her main research areas include ecological biochemistry, animal developmental biology, toxicology, and aquaculture. Nina Nemova has explored the adaptation strategies and mechanisms in aquatic organisms using comparative-evolutionary and ecological-biochemical approaches. She studied freshwater and marine fish, as well as aquatic invertebrates from various taxonomic groups in the Arctic and Subarctic regions, developed methods for assessing their condition under various environmental impacts and climatic fluctuations, investigated the general mechanisms and specific characteristics of biochemical heterogeneity formation during the growth and development of salmonid fishes in wild populations and in aquaculture, investigated the biochemical mechanisms underlying adaptive responses in living organisms at different stages of evolutionary development, carried out predictive research of potential changes in aquatic ecosystems.

Nina Nemova is the author of over 600 academic papers, has lead projects at various levels, and supervised studies for Cand. Sci. and Dr. Sci. degrees. Since 1999, she has chaired the Molecular Biology Department at Petrozavodsk State University.
