The vegetation cover of the western Kamchatka and the northern Europe blanket–bogs: a comparative analysis // Mire Ecosystems in Northern Europe: Diversity, Dynamics, Carbon Balance, Resources and Conservation. Proceedings of International Symposium (Petrozavodsk: August 30 – September 2, 2005). Petrozavodsk, 2006. Pp. 181-193
The vegetation cover description and the peat-layer analysis of the Western Kamchatka mires were carried out. A separate type of mire systems was estimated: the sage, dwarf-shrub and peat-moss rich blanket-bogs of the western Kamchatka. The blanket-bogs are wide spread at the foothills of the Sredinny Range in the forest belt formed by the stone-birch (Betula ermanii Cham.) forests. The blanket-bogs cover nearly 30-35% of the area. They occupy the watersheds and at the tops and slopes of the hills. The blanket-bogs of the Western Kamchatka and the Northern Europe (the North- Norwegian Atlantic Province) are very common in their floristic composition. The plant cover is formed by the same species of vascular plants (Andromeda polifolia, Empetrum nigrum, Baeothryon caespitosum, Eriophorum polystachyon, E. vaginatum, Carex rostrata, Drosera rotundifolia, Rubus chamaemorus, Thalictrum alpinum) and bryophytes (Sphagnum fuscum, S. balticum, S. capillifolium, S. papillosum, S. rubellum, Pleurozium schreberi, etc.). The east-siberian species are typical for the blanket-bogs of the Western Kamchatka: Carex middendorffii, C. cryptocarpa, C. dolichocarpa, Coptis trifolia, Lobelia sessilifolia, Iris setosa, Sieversia pentapetala, etc. The north-norvegian blanket-bogs are characterized by the west-european species: Erica tetralix, Calluna vulgaris, Narthecium ossifragum and others.
